It is not rare to come across images of Black communities—in photographs of civil rights movements through history, in the marketing material of brands trying to do better by their Black customers, in portraits of the Black leaders of the current protests for Black lives. It is more rare that those images were captured by Black people behind the lens. That is the driving force behind See In Black, a collective of Black photographers formed after the killings of Black people at the hands of cops: to counter “the gaze by which we were viewed” that was not their own, and to champion Black photographers who see and document Black stories beyond the headlines.

“We are artists and archivists,” See In Black founders Joshua Kissi and Micaiah Carter said in a statement. “We do not merely make images of Black figures, we document history that is often unrecorded with intentionality, respect, nuance, and care. We serve as a platform for Black people to stand proudly in their permanence.”

So beginning today, Juneteenth, and continuing until July 3, See In Black’s website will host the works of 80 Black photographers, prints of which can be purchased for $ 100 each. All of the profits will go towards five charities committed to abolishing white supremacy and championing Black communities—Know Your Rights Camp, Youth Empowerment Project, National Black Justice Coalition, Black Futures Lab, and The Bail Project.

Which brings us to you. Specifically, your home and that art that graces its walls. The prints will be produced by Artifact Uprising, a company that does really gorgeous photo work, in large format on professional-grade paper. You could do a hell of a lot worse with your money than supporting Black creatives, and improving your decor by leaps and bounds in the process. In this story you’ll see 10 examples of the photographs See In Black will make available to purchase, and below is a full list of the photographers who are participating. Take a look and see what catches your eye. Chances are, it will be all of it.
