Trump is Worried That ‘Mere’ Allegations of Abuse Are Ruining Lives

After a week that found two of his aides resigning in the wake of allegations of domestic violence by their ex-wives, President Trump took to Twitter with a heartfelt message of concern for victims of domestic violence. Oh wait, that’s not right—it’s the people accused of beating their spouses that he’s worried about.

Trump is likely referring to the resignations of speechwriter David Sorenson and staff secretary Rob Porter. Porter’s two ex-wives accused him of abuse, with one producing photos of herself with a black eye that she alleges he gave her, while Sorenson’s ex-wife says he ran his car over her foot and extinguished a cigarette on her hand. Both men issued denials of the allegations against them. Asked about Porter’s resignation, the president said that he wishes the twice-accused wife abuser well.

Trump’s tweet not only casts doubt on the accusers of his now-former staff members, but on the entirety of the #MeToo movement. That he would express doubts about the veracity of abuse allegations is perhaps unsurprising, as Trump has himself been accused of sexual harassment by at least 20 women.
